Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Aaron A — 08 Aug 2011
"somebody left the door open and the wrong dogs came home".
Synopsis: a mysterious stranger is hired to protect the inhabitants of a small lakeside town, but the stranger seems to have an agenda of his own, the villagers may have bitten off more than they could chew.
High plains drifter is a western in the classic sense. The town mirrors the angles of the road it's built upon, it takes place in a sun choked land, and all the gunfighters and trouble makers seam to have a soft spot for lago. But just because it's classic doesn't mean it's uninspired, and High Plains Drifter certainly is.
To help stand out from the crowd, the film is obviously heavily inspired by Eastwoods time with director Sergio Leone. The main protagonist (played by Eastwood) is a quick witted man of few words and a talented marksman. The is also a thick atmosphere of confrontaton and male bravado, another signature trait of Leone and his dollars trilogy. However, the action in this western seems to be 100% original and makes the conclusion intensly memorable.
Heavily inspired by Eastwoods collaborations with Sergio Leone, High Plains Drifter is an action packed western with style.
