Review of High Fidelity (2000) by Røgers C — 07 Nov 2011
Overrated. Generic happy ending love story that's been done a thousand times, with music as a mere back drop. Like Singles, Kicking and Screaming or even Reality Bites this movie could have been about comic books, films, cars, art or clothes and the love story would have carried over. What this movie ends up saying is if your obsession with something destroys your relationship, as long as you cry in the rain and say "I'm sorry" a thousand times she'll come running back. All without having to loss your obsession in the first place. Oh, please give me break...
Some parts were good, I did like the scenes in the record shop. As a collector of music myself I loved hearing the mopey John Cusack, the self-righteous Jack Black and Todd Louiso who was playing a meek, Donny from The Big Lebowski style character drone on about music and troll costumers. I also really enjoyed the flash backs to John Cusack's past girlfriends. However even with all of this my favorite part of the whole movie was when I spotted Bundle of Joy an album by Land of the Loops in one of the scenes. That's completely absurd! I mean is this a movie about music or love? It was just a whole big incoherent, jumbled mess that had me dosing on and off as I struggled to pay attention.
High Fidelity tries to go for Empire Records all grown up but just ends up coming off as pretentious, long and self-absorbed. Think pitchfork or /mu/ the movie.
