Review of High Fidelity (2000) by Jake A — 21 Feb 2012
High Fidelity is one of my all-time favorites and something I would rank in the top two music-themed films ever made, up there with Almost Famous. Firstly, Rob Gordon is the signature role of John Cusack's career.
I love Say Anything as much as the next guy, but Gordon embodies the sarcastic wit and depressed nature Cusack does so well with the charisma and likeability that few others have ever inhabited. Gordon himself is a character who does some pretty crummy things, to say the least, but Cusack is so good you really relate and feel for the guy.
The rest of the cast is fantastic as well, including a career best performance from Jack Black, and you know you have the makings of something special. Throw in all the music references, top five lists, endlessly quotable lines and my favorite breaking of the fourth wall, plus the fact it actually has meaningful things to say about relationships and the like, and you have a modern day classic.
