Review of High Fidelity (2000) by Simeon T — 25 Sep 2014
This is a hip movie adapted from a book by a hip author, and clearly intended for hipper people than me. Yet I still really, really like it. Everything about it works. I dig the way the film is narrated by John Cusack, who is as good here as he's ever been, maybe better.
The acting is terrific. This movie will remain a monument to what Jack Black can do if the dials are all set and he's perfectly calibrated. He and Todd Louiso form a hilarious team, the first being the animated, aggressive record snob, the second being the quiet, passive record snob.
They should have gotten their own spinoff, they're that good. Danish actress Iben Hjejle brings a certain down to earth quality few in this film possess, she's sort of the anchor for both the central protagonist/antagonist, as well as for the movie.
High Fidelity works as a chronology of an unstable romantic relationship, but it is a comedy and is primarily successful at making me laugh. The humour lands pretty consistently, and there is one "imaginative" scene in particular that is amongst the funnier, if violent, scenes in a comedy I can remember.
Yeah its kind of a hipster movie, but it is damn good, and not at all in an ironic way.
