Review of High and Low (1963) by Gabe A — 12 Mar 2009
Incredibly layered and complex work from Akira Kurosawa, and one of his rare instances of a contemporary movie. The visuals are stunning, crammed with elaborate details, and though the plot is adapted from a straightforward American potboiler, Kurosawa transfers it to Japanese society and creates many memorable sequences of devotion and class differences.
Especially great is the bullet train sequence: the spatial details and rhythms are incredible. One of his very best works.
