Review of High and Low (1963) by Manuel A — 20 Apr 2011
The film's first act is really exemplary of the dynamite duo kurosawa and mifune make, with long takes great acting and even better blocking and framing these two really suck you into the moral dilemma that is thrown onto these characters.
Its just a shame that for the most part the rest of the movie deals with a fairly hum drum investigation and man hunt for the killer, its not bad but it seems to lack luster when compared to the film's first hour. I got a real kick to see 3 of my favorite japanese actors in mifune, tatsuya nakadai, and a bit part by the great takeshi shimura.
Also kurosawa seems to have a nack for amazing ending scenes and here he serves up a haunting and brutal portrait of societal inequalities all in one final shot.
