Review of High and Low (1933) by Peter H — 14 Sep 2007
A gripping and ultimately fantastic thriller by Kurosawa perfectly juxtaposes different social classes in modern Japanese society and revealing its inequalities. A businessman faces a moral dilemma when a ruthless kidnapper, aiming to take his son, takes the chauffeur's boy by mistake but still demands the ransom.
Kurosawa provides no easy answers to the dilemma and the businessman, the criminal as well as the police respectively reveal equal amounts of brutality but also equal degrees of humanity.
