Review of Hide and Seek (2005) by Christian K — 31 Mar 2012
Just hide...
Robert De Niro, good... Dakota Fanning, good... Robert De Niro + Dakota Fanning = Not so good.
The Story: A young girl blames a series of haunting events on her imaginary friend. It's pretty much just a cycle of repetition something bad happens the little girl gets scared, the dad gets angry, something bad happens the little girl gets scared, the dad gets angry, rinse and repeat. It's got a pretty good spooky atmosphere, but the story falls apart toward the end as it turns into a jumbled mess of half baked concepts, and cheep scare tactics. This film could have been more, it just isn't.
The Cast: Robert De Niro, Dakota Fanning... Robert De Niro is David Callaway, a psychologist trying to deal with his troubled daughter and creepy neighbors. He gives a good performance but not good enough to really cover the poor writing and boring story. Dakota Fanning is Emily Callaway, the troubled little girl with the imaginary friend. She gives a haunting performance that actually outdoes De Niro, but just barely good enough to make up for the films aforementioned problems.
One to Five Scale: 3.
If you really like spooky movies, Robert De Niro, or Dakota Fanning give it a try... But I'd recommend just waiting for it to show up in your TV listings.
Tyler.
