Review of Hidden Figures (2016) by Eliasc — 31 Jan 2017
'Hidden Figures' is a top film for 2016 and well deserved for an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Based on real events, the film is a historical drama the takes liberties with some of the actual facts, particular the timeline of the events, but makes up for this by concentrated on a greater story of a 1960's America that has been sadly neglected. The film gives us the experiences of 3 very bright African-American woman who must deal with mid-20th century racism, sexism, and segregation while employed as 'computers' (human math calculators) before the age of electronic computers for the agency soon to be known as NASA. Working far below their abilities, the three main characters provide the key work for the launch of America's first successful man-in-space flight.
There were several excellent films released in 2016, but so far, there is only one that satisfies the Academy Award requirement for a film that will be historically timeless. That film is 'Hidden Figures', a film that will be remembered long after the other contenders are forgotten.
