Review of Hidden Figures (2016) by Angela C — 20 Feb 2017
Its a crucial story that needs to be told and certainly deserves its big screen adaptation. However, the film itself was handled quite clumsily and with too much of a heavy hand by the screenwriters and director.
It was overly and unnecessarily sentimental and soapy at times when it needn't be (I know that the male character M.Ali plays is based on a real person but in this story he's only a love interest.
Even though he's a fantastic actor, his bit felt unneeded). The story was not handled that expertly because all the time it felt as if the director, the music person, the screenwriter wanted to tell you how to feel and react at certain points (e.
G. this is the LOVE STORY PART, this is the TENSION BETWEEN WORKERS PART, this is the UPLIFTING PART, this is the CUTESY COMICAL PART, etc.). This heavy handed approach to tone and mood robbed its excellent actors from having more dramatic impact.
It needed a serious dose of subtly and ambiguity.
