Review of Hidden Figures (2016) by Gordon P — 20 Feb 2017
Saw the crowd pleasing HIDDEN FIGURES today, a great story about the African American women who used their math and engineering skills to help send John Glenn into orbit in the early 60's. It has humor, overcoming racism and a celebration of intelligence and teamwork that is a great message for modern times.
The score by Pharrel Williams is just great, and the acting is strong, especially Janelle Monae and Kevin Costner. Taraji P. Henson plays the comic side of her character, which makes a nice contrast to her Cookie role in EMPIRE.
Based on real stories, but it looks like some dramatic liberties were taken, and any white person with more than a few lines is very close to dropping prejudices with just some time with the women--but it's a pretty satisfying Hollywood tale overall!
