Review of Hesher (2010) by Mike C — 14 Sep 2011
Dysfunction on overdrive. Like Gordon-Levitt as 500 Days of Summer is probably my favorite movie. He's always so well dressed, so really wanted to see this alternative side of him. It sounded like it could be a nice inspirational flick as well. I think it missed the mark by quite a ways in that regard but was still fairly entertaining.
Young boy's mom is killed in car wreck. Dad and son are struggling. Boy runs into crazy character who does pretty much whatever he wants. It would have been nice to see the characters come together as was billed. Instead, Hesher is just kind of a douchebag. He does some funny things and shows some heart once or twice, but mostly he's just really fucked up and hard to like.
The best part of the movie is the climax. It actually played out really well and was very well acted on all parts (Gordon-Levitt, Portman, and the kid). From there, the ending is probably the weakest part of the movie. It's even more far out than Hesher himself. Still, a different role was worth watching, and some of Hesher's antics and lines are good enough for me.
