Review of Herø (2001) by Gregory G — 28 Nov 2014
An inventive, surreal, science-fiction, romantic drama by writer-director Spike Jonze set in a near future Los Angeles about a man who falls in love with his computer operating system. Joaquin Phoenix is a lonely, introverted anonymous writer of personal letters struggling to get over the impending divorce from his wife (Rooney Mara.
) He purchases an operating system called Samantha, an advanced version of Siri, who develops a human consciousness. (Scarlett Johansson supplies the voice of Samantha.) Jonze uses the premise to explore the interconnectedness between humanity and technology at the expense of interpersonal relationships.
This slightly far-fetched scenario is played straight with wry humor but it is also unabashedly romantic. Jonze won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. With Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, Portia Doubleday.
