Review of Hero (1992) by Elizabeth M — 10 May 2013
Hero directed by Zhang Yimou. Starring Jet Li as the nameless warrior also an assassin, Maggie Cheung (Police Story) as Flying Snow,Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) as Moon, Donnie Yen as Sky, Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs - Hard Boiled) as Broken Sword.
The movie is based on the story of nameless warrior's assassination attempt on emperor of Qin, Flying Snow, and Broken Sword. More than two thousand years ago, the king wanted to unify all six kingdoms of China and hence becoming the first emperor of unified land - this included his ultimate goal to completion of Great Wall of China to protect his subjects.
Hero comes with style and extravagant martial arts choreography; with pure addition of Chinese tradition. Expressions by Jet Li and Maggie Cheung are worth praising to keep the tone of the plot. Vivid set designs brings particular attention from audience at the conveyance of central theme of the movie. Dashing film that does not require to go epic and yet succeeds in establishing the facts and factuality over the historical accounts of China, including spectacular landmark of China. Film also sheds light over term 'Our Land' which is believed to be frequently referred by Chinese today.
