Review of Hereditary (2018) by Ray H — 10 Jun 2018
I can't understand the rave reviews Hereditary has received calling it a horror masterpiece. It's severely lacking in suspense and while it's a promising premise the end leaves you wondering what the heck you just saw.
And not in a good way. Toni Collette is Annie, a mother of two whose own mother has died after a lengthy period living in the family home. Her daughter Charlie is a bit strange while her son Peter (Nat Wolff) is a stoner.
While her husband Steven (Gabriel Byrne) thinks she's being distant and not coping Annie is unravelling as she learns more about her mother. Following a shocking event, that unravelling accelerates.
There's no real tension despite the score trying to tell you to be on edge and I was kinda bored for extended period waiting for something to happen. It's a shame for a decent idea and a good cast for it all to amount to a silly ending.
I don't often get it wrong when I expect a film to be good, but this is one of those cases. I saw a five star review, they didn't watch the same film.
