Review of Hereditary (2018) by Britney D — 26 Jun 2018
Really do not understand the hype. This film is a worse version of the Babadook, it really doesn't know what it wants to be. It has plot threads that are never followed through, a metaphor about mental illness that gets thrown out the window and tension that leads to nothing but a comedy for the last fifteen minutes.
The cinematography is amazing though, the film looks brilliant and the central performance by Toni is remarkable. But for everyone saying its a masterpiece and really scary, I just dont see it. The Babadook, which goes down a metaphoric arthouse horror style, does this far better than this film.
People say its really original when really its a haunted house movie with scenes trying to communicate to spirits, every interesting strand they set up they let go of, instead we get some cheap thrills for a funny last act.
