Review of Hereditary (2018) by Mcgama — 08 Jun 2018

This movie has incredible jaw-dropping horror. Chock-full of lore and a looming presence of dread this the best horror movie I've seen in my life. For the first time in years I was afraid of the dark that night.

This movie reminds us of what real, genuine fear is by portraying a very realistic and flawed family and how they cope with loss. I genuinely felt my heart pounding harder than it has from watching a movie and my friend almost had to leave the theater from a panic attack.

It adapts tropes from countless other horror films then subverts them like a magician with a huge bag full of tricks. I just watched it a second time and scanned all over every shot to see if I might have missed something.

People who complain about its run-time, as if that goes against the film, should reconsider film because art doesn't have to be constrained to a cookie-cutter rubric. People who say this film lacks jumpscares are desensitized to them.

There definitely are jumpscares in here except instead of resorting to to cheap, startling, non-contextual "BOO" moments there are uncomfortable scenes of imminent death making me feel like open prey about to be attacked.
