PRO TIP: How to tell if you will like Hereditary.
You wont: If you're into corny, cookie-cutter horror films (The Conjuring, Insidious, etc.),.
You will: if you are into original, artistic works that display emotional dread in a new fashion. Hereditary utilizes real life horrors (grief, loss, etc.) to venture down a unique path that is eerie and unsettling.
In summation, if you like using your brain to analyze a movie, I suggest it. if not, stick with the cheap thrills. My guess is that the negative reviews are from those who were anticipating the cookie cutter jump scares.
