Review of Hereditary (2018) by Jeff B — 01 Nov 2018
Ari Aster handles his first feature film with poise, as he creates a story that will leave audience's skin crawling well after the movie is off the screen. As a horror fan since I was a child, watching the gradual decline of horror movie quality has been rough for me.
The horror Scene has been bleached with haunted houses, evil spirits, and MURDERERS. However, movies like "Get out", "The witch", and this gem offEr the SUSTENANCE I've been looking for in the tired genre.
On surface level, hereditary follows many genre norms, but twists them in a way that makes the story feel fresh. The real scare in hereditary, and this new wave of horror, comes from two things: an incredible atmosphere, and its real life implications.
The soundtrack and sound design of this movie are some of the best I've heard in a long time. The simplest click from Charlie's mouth even becomes sinister as the story progresses. This movie's true horror is in the Graham's family dynamic, which is almost universally relateable.
Director Ari Astor knew what he was doing for every shot of this movie, making the entire movie seem like one of Annie's models. To top it off, we get an outstanding performance from Toni collette and the rest of the cast.
I would thoroughly recommend this movie to any horror/thriller fan, or someone looking for a movie to really dive into and research, because there is a rich heritage to this movie (pun intended). 9/10.
