Review of Hereditary (2018) by Elizabeth D — 26 Aug 2018
I anticipated this movie, as the previews and reviews made it look great. I am also a fan of Toni Collette, US of Tara, but, this movies plot didn't make sense. I understand the witch craft, and the paranormal bit, but what exactly is the plot? ***Spoiler alert*** quit reading here if you want to watch the movie!!! The movie makes you think it surrounds the death of the grandmother, but it really doesn't- it surrounds mental disorders- and if it would have stayed focused on that- it had the opportunity to be great, but, a few cheap thrills that don't make you jump, like mom crawling across the ceiling, ruins it.
I was actually more freightened by the mental instability of the mom than that of ghosts, but, again that crazy "could happen" horror is replaced by cheap cinematography. This movie seems to want to recreate the feeling of Rosemary's Baby mixed with Sinister without the scares, it still failed.
Toni Collette is the perfect actress, had she been given a script that allowed her to portray the crazy that she can, this movie would have been deveststingly good, but the script was all over the place, and half-assed, so were the "plot twists" if you can call them that.
If you've seen the movie- there is only one part that makes your mouth drop- and makes you feel super uncomfortable and out of control, but it's more saddening than scary or sick. I think the point of the movie is the mental illness is hereditary, and the family loses its shit, but not very dramatically.
It was like "this happens and this character is now just dead" without real reason behind it. The movie confused me in how it's a horror flick, it's more a drama and like I said, about mental illness.
