Review of Hereditary (2018) by Jon C — 22 Jun 2018
Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and newcomer Milly Shapiro deliver gripping performances in an unsettling, eerie horror story.
After their grandmother dies the family is left in shambles, Charlie the daughter has some unusual tendencies sleeping in the treehouse or making bizarre arts and crafts.
Her mother is a model designer and her son is very rebellious keeping to himself most of the time.
Another tragedy occurs and tears this family even further apart from one another and strange occurrences begin to take shape.
The film is an unnerving analysis of what possible traits we may have inherited from our parents; the grandmother had her own secrets and somehow wasn't lucid near the end of her lifespan.
So what does that mean for the rest of her loved ones? Can they succumb to the same ailments or do terrible things?
The film asks a lot of scary questions and there's so many neat visual cues that's like a trick of the eye.
The plot also takes several turns I didn't anticipate, not to mention that grisly ending.
It's probably too long but it succeeds creating dread and a spooky atmosphere.
Is the stuff that's hereditary nothing to worry about in the long run or should we slip more easily into the paranoia?
A horror movie that's explicit as it is scary.
