Review of Her (2013) by Connor C — 22 May 2015
Beautifully shot and featuring one of Spike Jonze's most creative and touching stories yet, Her relishes in its simplistic nature and uses just enough cool and slick sci fi to help it along. Joaquin Phoenix is mesmerizing and heartwarming as Theodore, a shy and confused letter writer just coming out of his shell after the difficult end of his marriage, something many men can relate to, however not many find salvation in an operating system that develops and evolves constantly and has human emotions.
Scarlett Johansson is funny, superb, quick-witted and deeply touching as Samantha, the advanced OS operating system which Theodore falls in love with. The pure magic of the film besides the performances, camera work and images is how it accurately shows the struggles and hardships that we as a race now must go through when finding love and experiencing loss.
Its complex themes of redemption and new beginnings makes Her something special in the best, most heart warming and touching ways.
