Review of Her (2013) by Ishar C — 17 Oct 2014
I don't really know what to say, except that this film knocked me on my ass. And it's strange, because Her is strange. It's a film about a man who falls in love with an operating system. Now, just by that description, one wouldn't expect much from a film like that, but much like a real relationship, there's much more to it.
Joaquin Phoenix does a great job getting us invested in his character, but the real standout, oddly enough, is Scarlett Johansson. She is only a voice throughout the film, but she does such a fantastic job at conveying all the emotion in the world.
And once you see the film, you'll be irritated to know that she was snubbed an award nomination because her performance was only a voiceover. Poor excuse. The rest of the cast holds their own and balances the drama with the comedy.
Visually, the world Spike Jonze has created feels futuristic, but not in a way where it couldn't happen. It's simplistic with a few tweaks. Overall, though, the story of a man and an operating system makes for a very interesting love story.
