Review of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) by J Luis R — 27 Oct 2007
Effective and unconventionally disturbing. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer's violence is actually fairly tame by today's standards, but it's more than that. McNaughton understands that the imagination can think of much more gruesome deaths than can be captured on film, and achieves this by showing the aftermath of deaths with sounds of the killing.
This also makes it so when it does get violent, it's exhilarating. Definitely understandable that when this came out, it earned it's X-rating. The ending is dare I say sad, even though one could probably predict it in the beginning.
The theme song is haunting and memorable.
