Review of Henry Poole Is Here (2008) by Joanne P — 02 Feb 2009
It's a shame that this movie was less than a sum of its parts. Strangely enough, the performances in this film were pretty good. Luke Wilson plays an isolated, rageful, depressive who refuses to believe that the stain on his wall is an image of Christ.
The movie centers around the neighbors' fixation with this magical wall and the hope that it can heal all that pains them. It just did not work for me. It was too trite, it was too sentimental, it was too self-indulgent.
I was very moved, however, by one performance....that of a wonderful child actress playing a very sad little girl who stopped speaking.
