Review of Henry Poole Is Here (2008) by Quentin N — 02 Sep 2009
I know I said this about Speed Racer earlier, but I was wrong. This is the most underrated movie that I've seen from the year 2008. This film recieved almost no respect whatsoever because everyone thought it was a by-the-numbers "religious" movie, therefore everyone dismissed it without giving it a chance.
This is a very thought-provoking and fascinating film. Unlike most "religious" movies, it doesn't bludgeon you over the head with its supposed message. The themes and subject matter of this film are entirely subject to an audience's interpretation and the filmmakers don't treat the audience like they are stupid.
Luke Wilson gives one of the most heart-wrenching and sad roles I've seen on the screen recently. Mark Pellington's directorial style is absolutely gripping. I was drawn in by the opening scene alone and was hooked until the last of the final credits crawled up into the top of the screen.
This is a movie worth a look regardless of what you believe.
