Review of Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) by Steven W — 18 Apr 2013
Hellraiser Bloodline is the best in the Hellraiser series since the first two Hellraiser films and it is totally impressive and one of the Hellraiser sequels that are worth watching. The plot of this film is about Paul Merchant who is on board on a spaceship to find the puzzle box that was made by his ancestors back in the 18th century and after being interrogated by one of the space crew that capture him the space crew soon learns of the Cenobites and it is up to Paul to stop Pinhead and his Cenobite friends once and for all.
To be honest I love Hellraiser Bloodline because it has all of the goodies that make it a good Hellraiser film and it has all of the goodies that seriously improved over Hellraiser III. Although unlike the first two Hellraiser films where the first two films stays true to itself Hellraiser Bloodline has a new style and acts as a stand alone film rather than following the style of the first two films.
But the film's stand alone execution is similar to the style of the first two Hellraiser films which totally makes the movie look good. What's great about Hellraiser Bloodline is that the film has managed to return the atmosphere of the series and I just love the shots where the atmosphere is well used and there are lots of impressive shots were the atmosphere is well used an these include the building shots and the space ship hallways and the atmosphere is overall great in the film.
The other things I like about this film is that the film's plot is far better than Part III's plot and I totally love the tale on how the puzzle box was made and it keeps you interested from start to finish and all of the backstories of the puzzle box's development is wonderful and fantastic and I just love the plot of the development of the puzzle box overall.
What I also like about Hellraiser Bloodline is that the film has a lot of impressie visual and special effects that totally beat the special effects of Hellraiser III and this movie is filled with gallons and gallons of blood and gore effects and there are lots of gore effects used in this movie and the gore scenes are effective, disgusting and nasty at the same time.
After a painful kill scene in the first half of the film the later on kills are disgusting and gory at the same time. The gruesome heart ripping scene is one of the most disgusting kills in Hellraiser Bloodline.
The second kill scene where a guy gets pulled by chains after solving the puzzle box is one of the most intense kills in the film. The twin brother kill and transformation into a cenobite is one of the most disgusting parts of the whole film and I love the cenobite transformation in that scene and it was pretty effective and well used on the graphic violence and gore effects.
While John Merchant's decapitation is one of the best kills in the film and the spaceship massacre in the finale has one of the goriest and the nastiest kills in Horror history and overall the kills are effective and well used on the gore effects overall.
The other things I like about this film is that the Cenobites look fantastic in this movie and the twin Cenobite is probably the freakiest Cenobite in the Hellraiser series and Pinhead is amazing as usual.
But my personal favorite monster in this film is Pinhead's Cenobite dogs which is totally new to the series and I love how Pinhead has a Cenobite dog in the Hellraiser series and it totally impressed me a lot and the dogs are damn freaky and scary at the same time and overall the monsters look great in this film.
The last things I like about this film is that the whole movie has a lot of magnificent settings and the outer space setting is impressive and magnificent and I love the design of the ship in this movie and they look fantastic for the film and overall the settings are magnificent in this movie.
Now the acting in this movie is really good and the acting is much more improved in here than the wooden acting in Hellraiser III and the casts managed to portray they're characters really well even Doug Bradley still managed to portray the character of Pinhead really well in all eight Hellraiser films and overall the acting in this film is a huge improvement over Hellraiser III's wooden acting.
Director Kevin Yagher(under the pseudonym Alan Smithee)did a good job with his work on this movie and I love how he managed to handle the film's concept really well and I wonder what's the next Horror film he will make in the future and I hope to see that as well if he makes another Horror film in the future.
Overall Hellraiser Bloodline gets a 10/10 because this movie delivers the goods that was missing in Hellraiser III and its stand alone tone is very impressive as well and it may not have the same style of the first two Hellraiser films but this is a great film overall.
