Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Morten S — 03 Jul 2014
I got to admit, the first time I saw Hellraiser I didn't liked it to much for some reason. Mabye it was because as a teenager I cared much more about gore and scares than anything else in a horror-film. But as a I grew older, I began to pay more attention to themes and ideas and watching this movie for the first time in like 10 years, I can easily say that I like it a lot more now than I did before. This is acturlly a very well done and creepy horror-movie.
The film's look and atmosphere are just wonderfull. It gives it a very dark-fantasy/ Lovecraftian feel to it and the themes and ideas it explores, which are very disturbing and horrific makes the film even more effective. Now the film is far from perfect, it does drag in some places, the acting can be somewhat hit and miss and some of the special effects can seem a bit dated by todays standards. The gore-effects however I stil thinks holds up quite well.
Even tough I don't really consider this film a classic. I still think it's a very good and effective movie. It's definitely a must see if you are a horror-fan.
