Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Kenneth B — 09 Jul 2012
Hellraiser delivers a kind or proto-torture porn although it doesn't lay it on too thickly. For the most part it is well paced and by limiting the amount on screen time that the Cenobites have on screen Barker increases their effect.
The special effects are generally quite impressive although the they are ropey at times, glaringly with the Monster that chases Kirsty during the hospital scene. Ultimately Hellraiser is a horror film of rare imagination from an era of the genre when such innovation was sorely lacking.
