Review of Hellraiser (1987) by Ryan V — 18 Dec 2015
A morally bankrupt pleasure-seeker (Sean Chapman) unleashes a powerful horde of extra-dimensional sadists with the use of an enchanted puzzle box. His only way to escape their tortures is to beguile a former lover (Clare Higgins) into serial murder.
Hellraiser is a hammy movie whose reach is occasionally shorter than its ambitions, but it's a remarkably sure-handed product considering that it's the first time horror novelist Clive Barker directed a film.
This movie also has some grotesquely memorable visuals, great make-up effects, an underrated score by Christopher Young, several noteworthy scenes of genuine suspense, and a hell of a lot more imagination than most of the other famous horror movies of its period.
