Review of Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015) by Phyllis L — 01 Apr 2016
Although an early year release lessens the chances for an Oscar nomination, Sally Field has never been better nor more endearing in her role of Doris in this delightful comedy treat. Doris is a hoarder and pestered by her well meaning brother to let the passing of their mother launch Doris to finally live a life for herself after caring for their mother and becoming a spinster in the process.
Doris is very old school but precocious. She works for a hip sorta publishing company which hires a new arts editor and he's hunky John Freemont (Max Greenfield). Doris finds a long submerged libido (but a very proper one) surfacing and through the help of the granddaughter of her BFF (Tyne Daly-long past Cagney and Lacy days) creates a FaceBook way to flrit with the new arts director.
Well, things turn in strange ways, signals get crossed, confusion of intentions, romantic and otherwise loom large, and Doris attends a RAVE! It's worth seeing the film just for the outfits Fields wears, fully defining herself as a true iconoclast.
The film is very sweet, not sacchrin and will leave you smiling. Look for Sally Fields for an Oscar nomination next February.
