Review of Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015) by Amanda C — 22 Sep 2016
It's so rare that women over 30 get any time on screen. When they do, they are almost always mothers. That's what makes Hello, My Name is Doris refreshing. Doris is sixty-something and single, she is an eccentric pack rat who fantasizes about the hot young guy who works down the hall from her.
Sally Fields appears to relish every second she gets to spend as this unique and wonderful woman, probably realizing this might well be the last decent part she gets. It is a film full of light and humour, while also touching on the realities of being an older woman in a society that does its best to pretend they don't exist as fully formed individuals.
There might be a few cheap shots taken at Doris throughout the film, but overall, she gets the last laugh.
