Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Michael Y — 26 Mar 2011
A sequel that's even better than it's predecessor, this new Hellboy movie from the brilliant mind of Guillermo del Toro has more money, more effects, more creatures, and is more fun.
In an ancient time the Elfs and Humans waged war. But after the Elf King's creation of The Golden Army a truce was held. Now today, the Elf King's rebellious son attempts to awaken The Golden Army to destory what is left of the human race. The only thing in his way, Hellboy and his big gun. Hellboy II is more mythical, creative, and funner than ever before. Not just because it takes us to new lands and see new creatures, but it's developing story is coming along nicely as well. Ron Perlman is still hilarious and kick ass as ever, but his character's journey through a world that now hates him, facing personal struggles with his relationship, and his ever nearer fate which promises the doom of the world drives this story into a more personal and creative side of the story. But the humour is still there, not to worry.
Guillermo del Toro works wonders with big budgets. Working amazingly in both the real world settings and the ones he creates, Hellboy II is a beautiful mix of story and visuals. The fantasy world we are brought into is a colourful and magical world, with creative costumes, amazing achievements in makeup, and an art direction of sets that are both fantastic with a touch of realism. The Troll Market is an incredible creation in itself, looking like a human black market, yet with creatures of all shapes and sizes everywhere selling God knows what. But seriously, the worlds in this movie are original, artistically beautiful, expertly lighted with many colours, and directed to capture the action and suspence wonderfully.
Definitely for those who love fantasy movies. Hellboy II is a very pleasing and never tiring sequel. The story is entertaining, the visuals are incredible, and the urge to see another sequel is very tempting after seeing the success of the first two movies. But as for Hellboy II, it's a fantasy movie for all to enjoy.
