Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by J.j. W — 07 Oct 2011
Guillermo del Toro can do no wrong. His direction is good in the movie. However the writing is so completely uninspired and, as an escapist movie, it starts seeping into subject matters that would have been better handled in a more serious and heavy movie.
The "tragedy" with Abe was glossed over too quickly, the end is highly predictable, and I personally found the visuals to be more of a gimmick than anything else. Pretty much another style over substance comic book movie.
But style can never replace substance. That's what most people seem to forget.
