Review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) by Dov D — 05 Aug 2013
Hellboy II: The Golden Army provides everything the first installment did and so much more. It is in every way superior to the first and deserves far more recognition than it's been getting. Universal Pictures must have been please with what director Guillermo del Toro did with the first film because they gave him a larger budget and more freedom to expand the world he created to match his grand vision.
The animatronics in this film are second to none. The CGI may have it's weak points, but the robots del Toro's people so skillfully craft are more than enough to make up for it and maintain the audiences suspended disbelief.
The character development picks up right where it left off and continues to depict Hellboy as more human than beast. The acting was good overall and story rich with detail. Hellboy 2 takes on a less serious tone and is able to make fun of itself in ways that the first one could not, and it does this while preserving the drama and real-life implications.
The fight scenes' choreography was solid and the comedic relief was handled extremely well. Bottom line, Hellboy II is a great comic book movie. In fact, I often found myself forgetting that Hellboy is a character from a comic instead of one from a series of fantasy novels.
I recommend this movie to everyone, especially people that think The Avengers is the best comic book movie ever made. This film should convince you otherwise.
