Guillermo del Toro's excellent sense of direction combined with an impressive ability for creating monsters combines to make Hellboy a fun, dark tale that is slightly above the other cliche superhero films.
Just slightly though. What del Toro manages to do that brings Hellboy above the bar is giving another side to the demon antihero. Giving him what you would least expect of Hellboy, a sensitive side.
