Review of Hell or High Water (2016) by Farah R — 09 Jul 2017
This movie is a testament to how good a simple story that is well told can be. It's a modern western, a no-frills account of two guys trying to beat the system, fighting back from being victims of predatory lending.
It blurs the lines between "good" and "bad"... who is really the bad guy, the bank robbers or the bank they are robbing? The answer would seem obvious, but it is definitely not. The story takes place in a dying Texas town with nothing but abandoned buildings and debt-relief billboards.
.. right in the heart of Trump's America. So it's timely, to say the least. Jeff Bridges was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this movie, and he's good, but it's Ben Foster who is the standout.
If anyone deserved an acting nomination from this movie, it's him. It's a good story with good writing, good acting, and good pacing (which is more than can be said for most other movies nominated this year.
.. this one has the shortest running time). So yeah, it's a good movie, but even so, it didn't blow me away. It was nice that Oscar threw it a bone, but this movie has zero chance of winning.
