Review of Hell House (2001) by Richard C — 13 Apr 2011
US-based evangelical cults are run by lunatics. So, what's new under the sun? Already a decade's gone by and this documentary is somewhat outdated; perhaps these hell houses were a new brainwashing technique when the film was released, because as far as I know, the churches down the freaking road are adapting their own sick versions of hell houses.
I think they're insane for preaching such propaganda, but I began debating with myself on whether they were knowingly misrepresenting information or not and whether society (The US' specifically) needs fear tactics and guilt trips in order to keep them in line.
It's funny how they openly declare themselves as a fear-based organization, whereas the fundies from Jesus Camp knew not of their emotion-manipulating evil. What does frighten me a bit are the implications: if this was a basic project run by a single church which racked up thousands of victims per year (The members actually built their own displays with household items), what the hell are they capable of nowadays with the technology available? Again, it's boring material unless you've been living under a rock unaware of these , so sure enough the best scene was when the offended group gave their two cents on the misdoing.
