Review of Hell Below (1933) by Jeffrey S — 21 Jul 2016
If you like wartime submarine movies, you will love this excellent pre-code (pre-censorship) film starring Robert Montgomery and Walter Huston, that takes place in 1918, near the end of World War I (filmed only 15 years after the time of the film!).
It' "pre-code" so you will hear talks of sex, a suicide, a forbidden romance, blood, and more! In other words, a more realistic look at life than the Hays code prudes would force on films just a year later.
Hell Below is exciting, dramatic, and very suspenseful. It is right up there with the best submarine films, including Das Boot. Very good movie. You will see a relatively young Walter Huston and also Jimmy Durante.
Well worth watching, and not dated at all.
