Lovely old film, which may not actually have launched a 1000 ships, but which first introduced me to the story of The Illiad when I was VERY young and set me off on several explorations of its locations (spured on by Michael Wood's In Search of the Trojan War). It is certainly more fun than being made to read the story in Latin (that dubious pleasure came later!).

Given the lack of the amazing CGI recreations of the more recent "Troy", the 1956 film still does an excellent job of re-creating the action and feel of the epic battles. If anything lets it down it is the more intimate scenes, which have a somewhat dated feel.

My recomendation is first see 2004's "Troy", and if you enjoy that, go back and check out this fine "original". The recent "Helen of Troy" TV movie isn't bad either.
