Review of Heist (2001) by Matt R — 15 Nov 2008
Well, this was my first encounter with Mamet, after hearing all of the great (as the back of the box says) Trademark Mamet Dialogue, I have to say I really don't know where to go from there. Sure, the dialogue was great, with characters who are all witty and can counterwit the counterwitted wit of another person.
The plot was pretty out there and went in a lot of circles, but at the same time I felt that it was easy to control and I understood what was happening (something that I hear is hard to do in these movies).
Of course, Gene Hackman dominates this movie from the opening shot to all of the different ticks he uses for each disguise, even to the judo, and all the way to the last reel of the film. Good, not quite great, stuff on display in this movie.
