Review of Heist (2001) by Justin M — 22 Mar 2011
"Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money.".
The master of deceptive filmmaking, David Mamet is back and better than ever in this twist a minute and ultra-cool crime thriller. A wickedly concocted, intrinsically twisted web of deceit and cleverness. Mamet and his trademark, smack you in the face, and bombastically snappy dialogue is back in full force. Heist is an incredibly intelligent and cerebral heist/caper film that could only be executed this well by David Mamet. Easily one of the smartest crime thrillers that I've seen in quite some time. A roller coaster ride of plot twists, double, triple, and even quadruple crosses that doesn't let off the gas until the credits start to roll. It's a film that literally and figuratively strikes pure gold in every scene. Definately one for any fan of crime, heist, of thriller films.
The cast is searingly astounding. Gene Hackman, a legend; Delroy Lindo, brilliant; Danny Devito, excellent. These three have brilliant chemistry together and are thoroughly engaging throughout. Fun for everyone, highly recommended.
