Review of Heist (2001) by Matt B — 29 Jan 2010
All con and no character. David Mamet's best ("Redbelt", "Homicide", "Spartan") all feature the same whip-cracking dialogue as heard here, but have characters complex enough to sustain their believability outside of Mamet World. The characters in "Heist" could never exist outside of a Mamet production, and their dialogue is largely interchangeable.
"Heist" isn't as structurally or symbolically airtight as the rest of Mamet's oeuvre, either.
It's a damn entertaining caper film, but Mamet has done and will continue to do better.
