Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Dylan C — 01 Aug 2010
Directed by Gerald Potterton and Jimmy T. Murakami, "Heavy Metal" is a plethora of vivid colors and stylized animations. It takes place on a farm where an astronaut has just returned home from space and has brought his daughter a present.
However, the present, a glowing green sphere called the Loc-Nar, quickly kills the father and before killing the girl, shows her 6 stories that demonstrate the Loc-Nar's power. When watching a movie like "Heavy Metal" you can't get too critical about the plot because frankly, there isn't much of a plot at all.
"Heavy Metal" has a unique style of animation but other than that, there's isn't much one could recommend the movie on. I was impressed at first by the animation however after the first two stories, I began to get bored and I longed for a change in direction.
Unfortunately, "Heavy Metal" goes in a straight line and hardly ever makes an unexpected turn. I would recommend "Heavy Metal" to the fans of the "Heavy Metal" magazine but if you haven't already read the magazine or aren't already mesmerized from the trailer, then you won't be missing much.
Also for those who haven't read the magazine and still decide to watch this film, be warned that there is a great deal of full frontal nudity, sexuality, and graphic violence.
