Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Ross V — 04 Jul 2017
It was a nerdy fourteen year old me that Heavy Metal transported to the Geek paradise of Nevermore. I loved the heady mixture of wiseass narrative and never before seen, by my virgin eyes, ultra cartoon violence and nudity.
This, along with Ralph Bakshi's work, blew my itty-bitty teen mind! The Loc-Nar is a memorable villain especially when its powered by Elmer Berstein's eerily potent theme. Then there's Taarna : where to start? This whole final segment of the film was a sexy marvel to young me ; older me, much older, finds it moving.
Even with the ridiculous fetish armour, Taarna and her turkey-dolphin (My name for a mount scientifically engineered to be adorable!) possess a dignity which transcends mere cheesecake. And that ending!
