Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Jonathan C — 23 Apr 2016
I had not watched this little cult classic in a few years before I revisited it on DVD the other night. It's about as cheesy as it gets, but perhaps the nostalgia I have for my youth kept it in check. "Heavy Metal" is jampacked with animated T&A, horrible 80s metal, and awkward voice work from guys like John Candy and Eugene Levy, but it's still super-cool to watch these 6 stories, which range from being ridiculously brilliant to just plain ridiculous, play out in its comic book style. The animation also ranges in quality, but with its run time quick and a constant slew of wild monsters and big boobs to take up the screen, why nitpick? "Heavy Metal" was made to be an 80s cult classic, and it still is.
NOTE: I'm excited for the rumored update coming out sometime in the next few years; with David Fincher, James Cameron, Zack Snyder, Guillermo del Toro, and Rob Zombie (reportedly among several others) taking shots at the wacky stories of the "Metal" canon, it could actually live up to the original!
