Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Abel D — 10 Jan 2014
This is one of the most vexing films I have ever watched. I can feel the potential. I can see where the Michael Cimino wants to go with this. It just never really gets there. There are many elements that deserve our attention and appreciation.
The authenticity of the settings is remarkable. I can even appreciate the gaps and spaces in the narrative that seem to recall the bizarre, incoherent, and sparse feeling that must have been felt by the people of the time.
However, this movie just never really satisfies. It could have been a masterpiece, but somewhere it just gets lost. If you want to see the best movies to rewrite the western genre, stick to Unforgiven and Dances with Wolves.
