Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Macdara C — 20 Mar 2011
(Watched Mon 14 Mar 2011) A flawed epic - very, very flawed - yet still better than its reputation might lead you to believe. Yes, the pacing is all wrong (Cimino seems to have a gift for killing whatever dramatic momentum he builds up); the love triangle centrepiece makes the more interesting land war story play second fiddle; and many of the characters are so barely drawn they might as well not be there at all (Jeff Bridges plays a major role, but you'd never know it).
On the plus side, some of the shots and settings are breathtaking, and Kris Kristofferson makes for a magnetic leading man.
