Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Adam B — 05 Jul 2008
I've always made a vow to never turn off or walk out of a movie before it's over, because after managing to make it through this infamous four-hour endurance test from beginning to end, I decided I could survive ANYTHING! Generally regarded as the most disastrous flop in Hollywood history, this pretty much killed Michael Cimino's career and credibility after his success with "The Deer Hunter" as his need for perfectionism and fanatical spending habits were beyond the realms of sanity; I mean, seriously, the guy spent a small fortune just filling the screen with DUST in most of his scenes, which only made them impossible to follow and unpleasant to look at.
The film has a very impressive cast, to be sure, but doesn't give them very compelling characters to work with, and its very uninvolving, incoherent narrative make "Heaven's Gate" the most expensive exercise in boredom ever made.
