A work of passion, intelligence, sensitivity, imagination. It was daring, although not suprising, that Peter Jackson went from this to The Lord of the Rings. Featuring excellent performances from first timers Melanie Lynsky and Kate Winslet, Jackson's handling of the drama and fantasy is pitch perfect.
